The North East Innovation Lab is today part of a discussion to share some of the challenges, insights and solutions affecting the in vitro diagnostics sector at an Infectious Diseases Working Party in London.
Close to 70% of clinical decisions are influenced by the use of in vitro diagnostics (IVDs), according to British In British In Vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA), who staged the session.
- IVDs test a sample of tissue or bodily fluid in an effort to diagnose an illness, condition or infection.
- They are an essential part of the NHS used by healthcare professionals to both diagnose patients effectively and work to provide appropriate treatments.
- Increasingly, they also allow people with chronic illness to manage their own conditions.
These types of tests may be done in laboratories, health care settings or even in the home. The tests themselves can be performed on a variety of instruments ranging from small, handheld tests to complex laboratory instruments.
The lab is working with innovators to ‘test the tests’ and accelerate them to mainstream use for patients across areas including infectious disease and cancer.
