Our placements give clinicians and industry healthcare and life science colleagues an opportunity to spend valuable time with our world leading teams to grow their skills and expertise in their chosen field.
International clinical observerships
Our clinical observer programme provides paid placements for healthcare professionals to observe our clinicians for a maximum of 12 weeks.
Each clinical observer is paired with a supervisor within the clinical speciality of their choice, who acts as a mentor throughout the programme.
During the placements, doctors can observe and participate in a range of activities including:
- Multi-disciplinary team (MDTs) meetings
- Clinics and ward rounds
- Management meetings
- Teaching sessions
- Observing surgery in theatres
- Corporate and local induction
This programme is strictly for postgraduate medical doctors. They must be qualified and registered in their home country. UK professional registration is not required to complete an observership as no hands-on clinical activities are allowed.

International clinical fellowships
Our international clinical fellowship programme takes place for a maximum period of 24 months, though most placements are for 12 months.
Fellowship training is offered across all of our three main hospitals including adult and paediatric specialties. It gives healthcare professionals with higher postgraduate qualifications to join us to build their existing clinical experience.
The programme aims to develop future healthcare leaders through offering structured hands-on training and experience of system leadership, transformational change and service improvement that will equip them with the skills to lead in complex and integrated healthcare environments.

Industry insight programme
Our industry professional programmes are designed to give people outside of the trust working in health and life science companies, some experience and understanding of our services.
The industry insight programme helps to support and strengthen our relationships with partners from across industry, which helps us to keep pace with medical advances to improve the services and care we provide to patients.
The placements provide on site training to give insight for industry into the patient journey – from diagnosis to treatment – for newly diagnosed patients.
This will enable industry professionals to:
• Understand the condition and treatments available
• Understand the day to day working of relevant physicians for example surgeon, oncologist, pathologist
• Learn how a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) works and how decisions are made
Typical timetable
The Trust will provide two days on-site training at Newcastle Hospitals for an agreed number of individuals to include:
Day 1 – clinic
Full day shadowing a consultant or other medical professional as agreed with client
Day 2 – Training and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting
- Morning – dedicated training session consultant or other medical professional
- Afternoon – attendance at a multi-disciplinary team meeting
The two-day training sessions can be provided throughout the year on dates to be mutually agreed. The programme is tailored to each organisation’s requirements.
