Director of Newcastle Advanced Therapies (and assistant director of pharmacy at Newcastle Hospitals)
With overall responsibility for the department and the development of advanced therapies within Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University, Mark holds a PhD in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and has significant leadership experience in both commercial and public organisations. He has a proven track record in developing partnerships across the NHS, university and industry to realise opportunities for growth.
Kay Carruthers
Head of operations
As operational lead, Kay manages a team of highly specialised staff and is responsible for the day-to-day activity across two GMP sites. Trained as a biomedical scientist, Kay specialised in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, haematology and transfusion science and has over 12 years’ experience working within regulated laboratory healthcare environments.
Dawn Hiles
Quality assurance and control manager
Dawn is a biomedical scientist with 20 years’ experience within the NHS delivering cell and tissue products to service users. Her wealth of knowledge provides oversight and guidance to ensure MHRA regulatory compliance and patient safety. Dawn is supported by a specialist quality team who look after a comprehensive quality management system.
Nicholas Moyse
Production manager, GMP manufacturing
With over 20 years’ production-based pharmaceutical experience, Nicky looks after the technical transfer, process engineering and validation of complex manufacturing projects within Newcastle advanced therapies. Leading a team of specialised scientists, Nicky supports an extensive portfolio of manufacturing processes under the MHRA license at our GMP manufacturing facility, Centre for Life.
Emma Matthews
Production manager, cell, gene and tissue laboratory
Emma is a trained biomedical scientist with an MPhil in antiviral T-cells. She leads a team of scientists, supporting the delivery of the haematology stem cell transplant service in collaboration with clinical teams. Emma is working to develop the service to introduce new innovative advanced therapy treatments.
John Davidge
Clinical trials manager
As clinical trials manager John oversees an extensive portfolio of CAR-T and GMO-based therapies, drawing on his knowledge and experience to review, implement and execute clinical trials and licensed advanced medicinal therapies from the cell, gene and tissue laboratory. He works in collaboration with the trust’s research and development team, pharmacy clinical trials unit and commercial sponsors.
