The availability of high-quality human tissue linked to clinical meta data is pivotal to the success of precision medicine and translational research.
Newcastle has a strong tradition of curating research tissue and developing biobanks. One of the most successful examples is the Newcastle brain tissue resource which has underpinned a myriad of world leading studies in neurodegeneration, most notably in Lewy body dementia.
Our HTA-registered biobank was established in 2017 as an NHS resource for research and has full biobanking Research Ethics Committee (REC) approval. Combined with the North East Innovation Lab biobank, we provide a range of over three million prospectively collected and archived clinical tissue and liquid samples for our clients.
The biobank also includes a huge tissue archive of Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) blocks used for tissue preservation dating back some 25 years. To give some context to this, currently more than 200,000 blocks per year are collected and stored.
