Summary
The fellow will be an advanced cardiology trainee either specialising in advanced heart failure, or adult congenital heart disease.
This is not a post for a cardiothoracic surgeon.
The fellowship will ideally suit a candidate who wishes to pursue a career in this field with an interest in heart failure, although other sub-speciality interests particularly imaging (Echo/MRI) could also be facilitated.
The one or two-year programme provides training and development under the supervision of one of our senior consultants and a dedicated educational supervisor.
As well as developing clinical skills, the programme will also help clinicians to develop a range of valuable transferable skills such as leadership, management, audit and quality improvement techniques.
Fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Work with world-renowned experts at one of the country’s major heart and lung surgical units.
- Develop highly specialised skills that they can use in their home country.
- Join the multidisciplinary mechanical assist or transplant ICU ward round whenever adult congenital heart disease patients have undergone these procedures.
- Perform the initial assessment of all of these patients referred by other UK centres for cardiac transplantation and/or mechanical assist device.
- Perform and report initial transthoracic echocardiogram on complex transplant referrals
- Perform and report peri-operative transoesophageal echocardiogram on adult congenital heart disease patients
- Attend and present cases at various relevant multidisciplinary meetings
- Contribute to general adult congenital heart disease and specialist outpatient clinics including heart failure in this field, Fontan procedure and combined obstetric-cardiac clinics.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing between Newcastle Hospitals and the fellow’s home organisation, developing partnerships and sharing expertise.
- Develop a network of clinical colleague, the programme offers a rare opportunity to train alongside colleagues from around the world.
According to their interests they may also perform catheter, cross-sectional imaging or electrophysiology procedures supervised and in a supported training role.
